Introduction
The GPS and GIS training started with an introduction to training objectives of GPS and GIS by DzFO. The handling and usage of GIS programs has become one of the priority knowledge for Forestry Extensions since it has to be incorporated with the Community Forest Management planning process in resource assessment and processing of the Community Forest Maps.
In the 10th plans goal, about 400 community forest has to be established around the country which is a paramount work load for the Dzongkhag Forestry sector. Therefore, every individual has to be prepared to face the challenges equipped with GPS and GIS programming knowledge which without it would fail to achieve the targeted goal. Moreover, this would help every individual forestry extensions to carry out their community forest management planning timely and without depending on other colleagues facilitating in establishing more community forest in the Dzongkhag and nation wide as whole.
With the above mandates the GPS and GIS training was conducted at Dzongkhag Forestry Office with the support from Dzongkhag Administration.
Training on Day one
On the first day of the training the participants were briefed by DzFO about the training objectives as mentioned in the introduction and the importance of map in the community forest and its interpretations.
The participants were introduced to GPS and its setup, the usage and the method of survey. After the introduction and through practice in usage of GPS the participants were made to do the survey exercises using GPS for the practice. Most of the participants were acquainted in usage of GPS which made it easier for the exercises.
Training on Day Two
On the second day of the training the participants were introduced to Ozi-Explorer program like installation of Ozi-Explorer, Configuration of the Ozi software, downloading of GPS data into Ozi-Explorer and editing of the treks and waypoint.
After that, the participants were introduced to Arc View program and installation. The participants were then taught how to export the GPS data to Arc View and importing of data from Ozi program.
The GPS data which was imported was then projected in Arc View program to process the refined survey which can be incorporated with LUSS data.
Training on Day Three
On the third day of the training the participants were trained to layout surveyed map with existing LUSS map to produce the map incorporated with geog and Dzongkhag map with land use. They were also trained on calculation of area like forest type and other valuable information required as community forest map.
After the three days of intensive training the participants were able to produce map as required in community forest.
Conclusion
Although the training was of short duration but participants could learn and practice well since most of them had the bit of knowledge in GPS and GIS. However, they were skeptical of full confidence since GIS is quite a tough program unless it is practiced daily.
One of the Sr. Forest Ranger from Bomdeling Wild Life Sanctuary (BWS) joined our Dzongkhag Forestry in GPS and GIS training through his interest. He expressed his satisfaction in acquiring GPS and GIS knowledge which he said that it will really help him in his day to day coactivity as park official. The sector acknowledges for his personal interest in joining the training and facilitating in training by providing projector to the sector.
With the training given to all the field staffs of the sector, it is hoped that Trashiyangtse Dzongkhag Forestry Sector will be able to establish and implement community forest activities as mandated in the tenth plan.
The Dzongkhag Forestry sector would like to acknowledge the resource persons in imparting their knowledge to our field staffs for the benefit of rural communities to achieve the millennium goal of poverty reduction. We would also like to acknowledge Dasho Dzongdag for his administrative support and financial sanction for conducting training.
