The people of Trashiyangtse are
basically subsistence farmers and depend on agriculture activities for their livelihood. The
provision of adequate and reliable irrigation facilities is a priority for the Dzongkhag to
bring about enhanced rice production as well as to grow other crops The major crops are:
cereals for grains (Paddy, wheat, millet and maize), root and tuber crops (potatoes), pulses
(beans, peas and ground nut), oil seeds (soyabean, mustard and pangtse), vegetables (peas,
radish, cabbage, cauliflower, brinjal, leafy vegetables, cucumber etc.), and orchard fruits
like orange, mango, banana, peach, guava and fodder crops. Most part of them is used both as
food crops and cash crops (when in excess). Among the cash crops the most important are:
chilly, potatoes, oranges and vegetables and maize (as wine and Kharang).
From the last
three years the total agricultural paddy production underwent high fluctuations, due mainly
to weather - related events (frequent droughts and monsoon flood).
