Livestock plays an important role in
supporting rural livelihood. About 91% of the households in the Geog own livestock. Like in
any other Dzongkhag, Livestock is very vital for agriculture farming to provide farmyard
manure and draft power. Livestock produce is an important source of cash income for the
farmers.
Tashiyangtse Dzongkhag has a total livestock population of 24,450 (as of
December 2004) including pig and poultry. The cattle alone constitute about 53.16% of the
total livestock population, out of which jersey cross breeds form only 12.7% of the cattle
population. As of December 2004, this Dzongkhag has 12% improved horse, 20% improved poultry
and 44% improved pigs. (Livestock census 2004)
The livestock contribution for support
of rural livelihood from livestock production is estimated at Nu.35.878 million, but in cash
income from sale of livestock and its produce is only about Nu.6.657 million and about
27.220 million is estimated for self consumption value (livestock production data of
December 2004)
